SXSW 2009 torrent

SXSW '09That time of the year again, folks, SXSW 2009 is just around the corner.  And as every year since 2005 there’s a huge unofficial torrent – currently there’s 2 downloads available with a total of 1053 tracks coming in at 5.05GB! And there will be more which will be posted at a later date.

Great to see that there are more Irish bands than in previous years as well, 19 altogether from both north and south of the border:

The Beat Poets, Fighting with Wire, General Fiasco, In Case of Fire, Ski Bunny, Andy White, Wallis Bird, Dirty Epics, Fight Like Apes, The Guggenheim Grotto, Lisa Hannigan, Kiernan McMullan, The Mighty Stef, One Day International, Republic of Loose, Sickboy, The Brothers Movement, The Urges, and We Should Be Dead.

MySpace music downloader

I’ve come across several methods in the past to download tracks off MySpace, but this has got to be the easiest one:

MySpace Music Downloader

Just enter the MySpace URL of a band’s profile, hit the Decode button, and the tracks are available for download in seconds.

Update: Looks like that link doesn’t work anymore. Here’s another one: MusicGrab

menwhopause

menwhopause were one of the many bands showcased in this year’s SXSW torrent and their track Father Monologue caught my attention right away. And, as they just informed me, they are also the first Indian band to ever perform at SXSW.

They are an excellent acoustic progressive/psych rock band from New Delhi, India who produce their music in English. They started out playing together in 1991 in an abandoned warehouse. It was a band of dedicated fans that pushed them to get their music out into the open. In 2003 they self-released their 3-song EP The Story Begins on their website, and it was an instant hit. And even though the EP was available as a free download, bootleggers got in on it making money with pirated copies. After that they started to get international airplay, including on the BBC, and got into the top 10 on international mp3 sites.

Since then they concentrated on writing original material with good lyrics, even raising the bar for other Indian bands to do the same.

In 2006 they released their concept album Home. It’s available from their website as a free download, complete with album art.
